Praja Rajyam Party to support Congress in Rajya Sabha elections

June 1, 2010
Hyderabad

The Praja Rajyam Party has announced its decision to support the candidates fielded by the Congress in the forthcoming biennial elections to Rajya Sabha. The decision was taken up at a meeting convened by the Party president K Chiranjeevi with the party's political affairs committee members, MLAs and other senior leaders on Tuesday where it was unanimously resolved to accept the recent request by AICC president Sonia Gandi to support her party candidates.

The Praja Rajyam Party claimed that the decision to support Congress was 'mere electoral understanding' confined to the ensuring biennial elections. PRP senior leader C Ramachandraiah said the party would not decline any reciprocation by the Congress if the latter wanted to show any good will.

Support to the Congress should not, however, be construed as support to the government's policies and the Praja Rajyam Party would continue its struggle to mount pressure on the administration to address the issues of the public importance.

It may be recalled Chiranjeevi has met Ms Sonia Gandhi and other top Congress leaders in regard to extending support to the Congress Party in the 2010 Rajya Sabha elections after receiving a call from the Congress party.
